ATTAM (All Things To All Mankind) has been the talk of the town in NYC Christian Hip Hop for the last two years. His lyricism, songwriting and performances, a genuine heart for Christ, and excellent driven pursuit of his music career have made ATTAM stand out.
Six EPs, one collaboration album, and eleven singles later, we finally get the highly-anticipated and long-awaited debut album from the ATTAM Group, “Road Less Taken.”
CONCEPT
The album — if you can guess by the title — documents his journey through Christ in 19 tracks and heavy hitter features such as Selah The Corner, Rik Montero, Th3 Saga, William Cata, Co-Campbell, Jay Cabassa, YP aka Young Paul, and more!
The album is divided into two parts: Tracks 1–9 is the journey, and tracks 10–19 is the chosen path. I believe this division reflects the themes of the songs in each part.
ATTAM’s prayer for this album is for the listener to take the “Road Less Taken.” With lyricism and catchy production, ATTAM paints a picture to the listener of what that road looks like and how it looks like in his life.
PRODUCTION
ATTAM showcases his diversity in sound through the album. He has rappity rap songs (Christ Supremacy, Modern-Day Psalmist, Trailblazers), trap songs (Purgatory, Lost in the Dark, Believer), and anthems (Romerican Empire III, Human, Cross Bronx & Bridges, Letting Go).
As I was getting ready to listen, I didn’t know what to expect. I was impressed with the sounds ATTAM dug into. Production was handled mostly by Chris of SoundMyndMusic and SOSMusic. They captured ATTAM’s flow, bars and delivery perfectly with the beats.
For rappity rap songs, Trailblazers featuring Selah & William is a hit! This song should’ve been, at least, the last single before the album! It’s a certified NYC anthem. The beat and witty punchlines made this the perfect song.
My favorite from the first half is Lost in the Dark featuring D.E.V. & Saint NickLS. This was a lyrical exercise and cypher-like. All the artist showcased their unique lyrical skills and flow over a fast beat. This was the fastest I’ve heard ATTAM rap!
Romerican Empire III featuring Co-Campball is a movie! Out of all the anthems on the album, this one stood out to me. If there was a movie about the corruption of America, this song NEEDS to be the soundtrack of the movie. It was executed perfectly along with the music video.
LYRICS
I’m going to quote what someone said at ATTAM’s album release party:
“There is NO BAD ATTAM verse.”
That person is right. ATTAM is a genius wordsmith. His wordplay is immaculate. If Christ Supremacy didn’t convince you that ATTAM can rap, listen again as a hip-hop fan!
My favorite bars from ATTAM on this album are
But alas, before I digress I guess my stress comes when I abide less Or hide my mess, so my eye test of why I press, let Him guide my best
BARS!!! This verse comes from the song Game of Hearts The wordplay is CRAZY!!
Magic always happens when ATTAM, Co-Campbell & William Cata come together for a song. Mile Marker & Cross Bronx & Bridges are lyrical gems. Each artist displays their unique lyrical approach to the beats. They share the beat with different styles that complete and complement the song.
ATTAM’s style is intellectual with imagery and wordplay. William Cata is in your face with flow and wordplay. Co comes in with melodies and bars.
It would be criminal not to mention Trailblazers featuring lyrical powerhouses Selah The Corner & William Cata, this is a certified hit! To quote Co Campbell at the album release:
“This song made me feel alive! I haven’t felt that since Lauryn Hill’s album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.’”
That’s a HUGE statement, coming from Co Campbell. There is too many bars to list on here. You’d just have to listen to the song.
This song needs a video!
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is ATTAM’s Illmatic. The album was crafted in excellence. True excellence takes time, patience and thought. This album took two years to complete and I will say it was worth the wait.
This album has NO SKIPS! I can listen to the album from beginning to end, clean to the album, drive to the album, and work to the album. It inspired me to reflect on my journey to the “Road Less Taken.” I pray it does for you too.
Considering this album was 40 years in the making, the last song, Letting Go holds a special place. It ends the album on a worshipful note. This is what happens when you take the “Road Less Taken.” You will abound in the blessings of God. This album was one of those blessings for ATTAM & his listeners.
